The Great Depression
The self-caused Competitive Money Economy collapse in the 1930's brought massive unemployment, poverty and despair, illustrated here by the Jarrow Crusade.
There was no real practical reason or justification for this disaster, which deeply affected all countries but particularly the industrialised ones.
There was no actual difference between the basic material situations before and immediately after this collapse. There was the same work to be done and there were the same people willing and able to do it; the same resources, the same mouths to feed.
All that changed was the perceived artificial paper value of money. This undermined the economic system upon which humanity had allowed itself to depend but which had never served them equally well and now betrayed them altogether.
Things have improved since the early 1900's, yet homeless people are still to be found in every big, civilised, rich city, living under bridges, sleeping in shop doorways. However much people of compassion and goodwill wish to eliminate such poverty, Machine-rules prevent it. People who do not or cannot conform to the rules have to suffer the consequences.
The collapsed artificial money-economy was eventually restored by artificial means, and the enormously cruel burden of suffering was gradually eased. But authority did not replace this indefensible system. It partly redirected it, only to replace the old sets of problems and ills with new ones as the Machine depleted, polluted and degraded our natural resources and engaged humanity in accelerating autoprogression.
This existing reality dictates our overall present Definition of Human Being - that we, world humanity, firstly subscribe to, serve, and submit to the Machine and its competitive money-economy while trying to be as kind, humane, loving and giving as the Machine allows us in our circumstances.
