The Wrong Reality. PartV Interpretation. 32 The Roots of Religion - continued
In the case of the evolution of the stick insect this translation of sensed need into effective action was accomplished by a means of transferring genetic influence that I presume is as yet unknown to us. In the case of the formation of the first eye, I have suggested that a similar transfer took place between the desire and vital need to see and the irresistable determination of cells to experiment until they had constructed the functions of sight. In the case of Gaia the vital wish of all life to go on living somehow persuades the mechanisms of the entire planet faithfully to maintain the conditions desired and required. The involuntary mechanisms of the animal or human body similarly co-operate in the best interests of the overall conscious will to go on living, and the unknown means of communication between systems, that have no connection detectable to us, may be paralleled by the potency of homoeopathic medicines in which less than a molecule of the original active element remains.
In the same sense that we are for the benefit of the living cells in our body, Gaia is for our benefit. In the sense that the cells of our body sustain us, we sustain Gaia. In due course the universe, and all the planets that bear intellectually-aware life-forms, shall mutually sustain a similar relationship, and may already do so. The explanation of Gaia as an intelligence corresponds to intelligent life's will to continue causing the continuation of life. This will is exercised on sub-atomic micro-particles and biological systems at bifurcation point so that they pursue life rather than death. The total will of the living is translated into Gaia's will to maintain a physical framework of life which it exercises on the ocean beds and the atmosphere in order to turn them towards one activity rather than another. Why not? Is it to be expected that the will of living creatures has none but local effect and does not combine in this powerfully effective way? And why should Gaia support life on Earth? Surely for a better reason than to perpetuate the wasteful, meaningless cycle of life and death, creation and destruction. Life, from each single cell serving the individual to Gaia serving Earth; from the crude and blind expression of energy, that does not mind what direction it takes as long as it advances, to intelligent effort dedicated to finding the right direction - life in all these forms exists for the supreme purpose of realising truth in the universe.
It seems to me that Gaia works in this way. The constitution of the atmosphere, the temperature, the consistency of sea water, the distribution of needed elements and the dissipation of poisonous elements - they all need to be kept within certain limits if life on Earth is to survive. Unless every one of these conditions is maintained, much, most or all life shall perish. All inanimate matter and the systems in which it is involved are subject to micro-particle physics. All life is endowed with intense feeling. Suppose there were a steep rise in temperature. All life, geared to a lower norm, would suffer acute discomfort and a worldwide distress signal would be put out. This signal would affect allmicro-particles and the systems of which they are part, on and around Earth. At the moment of hairs-breadth quantum decision, enough particles would respond, by changing their accustomed bias of movement from left to right for instance, or vice versa, sufficient to change systems-procedures and their effects on life. Then would follow a series of trials and errors in which all possible changes and combinations of change were tried and judged according to the most minute collective emotional responses of Earth's life. By this natural process of elimination the cause of distress, over-heating, would eventually be discovered, also the appropriate reaction - a change in constitution of the upper atmosphere so that it gradually increased in effectiveness as a shield against the sun's rays to the point where life's distress was fully relieved.
Bearing in mind this power of living will, as demonstrated by Gaia, and that a similar process regulates the balance of nature by making a place in the competitive ring for every species determined to live, why has the human race become dominant? It is easy to see why we hold the whiphand now, but there were thousands of years when we were very vulnerable. Why did we progress, rather than take a permanent place in the balance of nature as did the bushmen? When we began overrunning the world, why did not the distress of the rest of nature gather into forceful opposition to our progress and make us toe the natural line? On those occasions when we have stepped out of line and become vulnerable to threatening diseases, why have we been able to heal ourselves? Why has nature given way to us so easily? Why have horses, dogs, cattle and other animals become domesticated? Why are complex and idiotic Western ways accepted everywhere as superior to many of the more sensibly practical primitive ways? Why has nuclear war not occurred, when enough competitive aggression and many possibilities of accident exist to make it seem a certainty? Many causes and reasons for these things could be put forward, but I think the main underlying reason is that just as the oxygen-producing amoeba prevailed over all other methane-adjusted life because oxygen is essential for the development of thinking animals, so we are similarly given preference by the true influence because we and our otherwise idiotic ways nevertheless represent increasing exercise of intellect and therefore advance in potential towards realisation of truth.
But why the realisation of truth? Because this realisation, achieved on this and many other planets, may so strengthen the true influence as to physically transform the universe. This transformation is the aim of universal activity and will be attained in the same way that Gaia, by the influence of living will, maintains a kindly biosphere on Earth. That aim is to bring energy and truth into mutual, gentle, tranquil, universal true equilibrium.
As truth is increasingly realised, the influence of life-force to express energy will decrease. The early effect will be that intellectual life on Earth, and on all similar planets, will depend less and less on the physical laws and automatic lores. Autoprogression will cease and life will slow down to a state of peaceful cooperation that will greatly strengthen the universal influence of truth. We shall remain dependent on life-force, but decreasingly, as active living is slowly transmuted into awareness of truth. When we and all other forms of life are gone, the physical laws will give ground to true influence. Turbulent chemicals will tend towards stable harmony and balance rather than reaction. Eventually energy will break down into its simplext basic elements without feeling impelled to implode. Mathematics will reduce to the equation 1 x 1 = 1. Truth and energy will then come to co-exist in the optimum state of slight, gentle and unchanging oscillation in perfect universal concord, which is true equilibrium.
This is the ultimately true state of energy - to achieve which is the sole purpose of temporary violent activity. Truth is the sum of all history, all actuality and possibility, whose only purpose in inciting energy was also the attainment of this optimum state. Otherwise truth does not need to be expressed in form, or word, or thought in order to be true, nor does it require the continued existence of intellects capable of understanding it, for it simply isthe veritruth. Therefore the ultimate, optimum universe in true equilibrium is the perfect state of all material things in harmony, for in tranquil energy is the potential for all possible physical matter, and its positive or negative movement. Energy will thus achieve its sole objective and so assume its simplest state - that of irreducible fundamental particles vibrating to the balanced minimum. The ultimate universe will also be optimum truth vibrating in perfect harmony with itself and with energy. This veritruth is total awareness of all explosive and implosive, constructive and destructive, possibilities of matter, a record of all knowledge and utter understanding of all reason, which then has no possible cause for, or need of, further doing, knowing or reasoning. It is this influence of truth at its strongest that keeps energy, at its weakest, to its lowest possible level of activity. It does not signify that we humans and others like us may never know veritruth, for our optimum satisfaction lies in supraconsciousness of humantruth.
Of course, if the true influence fails to transform a universe before it turns from expansion to contraction, there will be another big bang and a repeat evolution of life. To we who are reasoning animate creatures the idea of true equilibrium may be repugnant, for our nature has been formed in a contrary way by our history of explosive evolution. But imagine it as the balanced perfection of the stillness which those who meditate (in the wrong era and for the wrong reasons) try to achieve. It would be the essence of being, without need of thinking as we practice it by the utilisation of knowledge for the manipulation of reason, without need of ambition to attain or obtain anything, and admittedly without the excitement that goes with it, but also without the pressures of life, the tragedy of death, and the struggle for temporary personal balance. It would be tranquility of extreme simplicity rather than our present opposite extremes of continual autoprogression into rising complexity. This comparison is ultimately irrelevant since such as we, though we achieve our optimum state of supraconsciousness, shall always be bound to physical matter and can never, as our biological selves, experience true equilibrium. But it may help to counter the majority's preference for the devil they know, even though it is propelling them to hell, and to reinforce the truism that the nearer we can bring our society to that perfect state of truth the happier we shall be.
The foregoing explanation of the meaning and purpose of life can be compared with religious explanations in this way - as a comparison between the truth and misrepresentations of the truth which consciousness, unwilling to learn from its higher mind, deceives itself into believing by way of imperfect and incomplete reason. The fundamental influence of truth is misrepresented by religion as some divine power, or god; true equilibrium as heaven, and implosion as the descent to hell. The concept of reincarnation comes from the sensed knowledge of previously repeated, and possibly yet to be repeated, big bangs allied to a desire for immortality. Universality, or cosmic consciousness, is veritruth which the universe, under the influence of truth reinforced by living intellect, will eventually come to terms with. Prayer, the imagined relationship between an individual and a mysterious god, is really the dominant consciousness importuning the misused and misunderstood postconscious. The human concept of good and evil comes from our awareness of a morality that arises from intellect, struggling with our opposing loyalty and subservience to the amoral automaton. Our current theory that we may not know humantruth because that is the province of an inscrutable god, or ethereal consciousness, derives from our failure yet to become the fulfilment of our own minds, and our disinclination to make the effort.
In this existing reality we are overshooting the mark of true intellectual progress by extending knowledge but neglecting reason. We are employing intellect automatically to explore things, not only to serve the money economy nor simply for the satisfaction of instinctive curiosity, but also because, in our ignorance, we are attracted by the challenge of the unknown merely for its novelty, and impressed by the mystery of the unknowable. We do not rely on thoroughly reasoned deduction but take the view that whilst much actual knowledge lies beyond our grasp, and whilst unproven human concepts such as gods can not be disproved, we may not attain to true overall understanding. Yet we accept the evident facts of our existing reality, and all parallel proven scientific fact, even though we also accept that in another era, such as when the universe implodes, these facts will no longer apply. We have identified ourselves with a process of building fact upon present temporarily true fact, just as the automatically expanding universe and Earth-nature have done, applying our intellect to further pursuit of this meaningless process, failing to grasp that we are now the agents of whole truth, not just limited local truth. I have pointed out already that when mysteries are uncovered the truth then revealed is always matter-of-fact and that facts are not truth, only part of it - knowledge, the essential counterpart of which is reason. In the pursuit of truth pure completion of reason results in simplification of fact. The task of human and every other intellect is to perfect reason in order to rise above or dismiss facts as far as practicable, and realise truth as far as is possible for planet-bound creatures.
Our supreme purpose is the realisation of truth. This must rule out all lesser faiths and ideologies and displace all other loyalties. It is vital to remember that we humans are not an end in ourselves but the means to an end. That end is truth and the means its observance in all things. This is of great importance to us, for we are presently so preoccupied with superficial interests as to be ignorant of our overall responsibilities. Unless we strive with our intellect towards fulfilment of truth we shall fail both the higher potential of our minds and the responsibility for the survival of our species, for all other influences and activities are false.
You might reject my uncorroborated explanation of the meaning and purpose of life. But I can conceive of no other reason for the achievement of intellect except chance, and does it look as if it occurred by chance? Surely not, nor that it occurred purely to enhance survival. If the sole object of life were the optimum expression of energy would not the apefolk, prospering alongside the rest of nature, achieve that object at least as well as a human species that is rising whilst the rest of nature declines? For me there is no question but that the creation of our intellect has put Earth at risk, and little doubt of the reason - that whilst our security and satisfaction is part of universal fulfilment and both depend upon living intellect fulfilling its potential, we have not yet achieved that potential.
This brings me to the essential aim of this book - to point out that just as we are capable of comprehending, by true reason, that the meaningful purpose of the universe lies outside its present physical processes, so the meaning and purpose of human life is not expressed by our present reality but will be expressed by an alternative reality that brings ourselves and our world to a state of stable and peaceful cooperation. If you do reject my explanation, and even if you ignore the universe and consider only the rights and wrongs of human world society relative to our optimum well-being, I think it remains self-evident that intellectual supraconscious fulfilment is the only road to humantruth and guide to happiness.
The seventh meaning of truth see Chapter 13 gives it as the source of right, honest and good morality (a sense of which might be conceived as god) on which our true state of being shall be founded. Let me explain how this can be. Let us represent amorality as chemical reactions between substances which, when they come together in certain conditions, cannot react but in certain ways prescribed by their relative properties, with no other possibility allowed or remotely envisaged. In life, these prescribed properties are represented by the instinct, which similarly binds creatures to certain ways of behaving. A distinction is made between good and bad moral behaviour with the advent of intellect. A limited measure of good morality may be represented by the influence of Gaia, which re-arranges or controls otherwise automatic reactions in such a way as to benefit rather than inhibit the evolution of life. In the human race, as far as it has developed, the advent of intellect has produced a state of mixed morality. Whilst we suppose ourselves to aspire to good morality - caring, constructive, co-operative, peacable and loving activity - our affairs are dominated or underwritten by immorality - competitive, dishonest, hostile, aggressive activity. Optimum good morality is true equilibrium, a state not possible of achievement by the most advanced, intellectual, life-forms because of their physical restrictions. Earth humans can achieve a state of supraconsciousness, of wholly good moral intention founded on a humantrue social structure. But even then we shall be well aware of a compulsion to practice a measure of 'bad' morality for the sake of sheer survival (e.g. the killing of plants and some animals for vital food, and of harmful competitors - vermin, pests, parasites and bacteria), but to the minimum, and with regret that it is unavoidably necessary - with the concerned restraint that supraconsciousness enables and obliges us to exercise.
The significance of all this is that it reveals the seventh meaning of truth (the source of our moral goodness), that truth is perfect harmonious concord (which we may not wholly achieve), made up of parts and principles (many of which contribute to that state of caring compassion, without any avoidable dispute, disturbance or disruption, that we may attain to - humantruth) which are absolutely beyond the reproach of supraconscious intellect.
